HUMANIZATION FROM THE PERSPECTIVE OF NURSES IN AN INTENSIVE CARE UNIT

Abstract

Humanized care in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) is an important topic that reflected in nursing care. The objective of this study was to understand nurses' perceptions of humanization in a Neonatal Intensive Care Unit. To this end, a descriptive and exploratory field study with a qualitative approach was conducted in a public referral hospital in western Paraná. Three nurses working in the NICU participated. Data collection was carried out through semi-structured interviews, and the content was analyzed using the content analysis technique proposed by Minayo (2012), allowing for the categorization of the statements and their interpretation in light of the scientific literature. The results revealed three main categories: (I) lack of knowledge about humanization and team training; (II) difficulties faced in clinical practice; and (III) strategies used to humanize care. It was observed that the National Humanization Policy is poorly disseminated among nurses, being applied empirically. The main difficulties relate to structural limitations, lack of resources, and high staff turnover. However, sensitive practices stand out, such as skin-to-skin contact, colostrum therapy, and the use of nests and octopus-shaped devices, which strengthen the mother-baby bond and humanize care. It is evident that humanization depends on both structural and institutional conditions as well as the affective and ethical disposition of the team. It is concluded that humanization in the NICU is an ongoing process that requires continuous investment in training, professional development, and structural adaptation. The creation of listening spaces, the strengthening of continuing education, and participatory management are essential strategies for consolidating humanized practices, ensuring the well-being of the neonate, the family, and the nursing team.
